Getting Ready to rebuild my 383 too...Using the 440 Source Heads. Heads may need some work to get me to the desired 10:1.....440 Source rods, Pistons yet to be determined, Schneider 140H Stick (280/480) and Weiand 8088. Going to let Machine shop guide me on final but headed that way next. Will update as the build progresses. Just wanting a strong street motor with a little fun backed by 2800 Stall and 3.55 gears.

The problem is with the stock stroke and huge head chambers it's hard to get a decent compression ration with a flat top in a 383. If the shop just made the deck surface flat and installed the pistons, you need to see how far down in the bore they are. Most 383s have taller decks than blueprint and you'll want a static at least 10:1 with it. The best scenario is cutting the deck to get them .015 proud of the deck, then reduce the chambers as far as you can. I believe you can get them down to 68 ccs without any issue (.100") and that will get you a true 10.6:1 with a quench of .034". If you simply bolt on the parts and run the piostons on a factory-but-flat deck you will have a static ratio of 8.4 or so. Not nearly enough for that head as BJR suggests.
I just took.033 off of my trickflow heads and holy ****, that was 1 hour.
I should have used the broach for the first .030
That was just 6ccs .
I bet to machine.100 it would cost $300-400 bucks.
But yes it can be done and then he'd have to cut the intake sealing surface a **** load maybe.250 a side.
On 2nd thought I would not do it, and I agree with the rest.

Put a 3.750 stroke crank in it.

You can call on any of the aftermarket piston companies and get the right pistons made, if you're going to do it, do it right!!

I agree the right piston always helps to make things optimum.
However in the real hot rod world , not everyone wants to spend the coin on different pistons or even has it to spend.
I know several guys with 383's using stealth heads and all their cars run well.
This day and age I feel that the cost of the cheap aluminum heads are a better deal then stock cast all day.
Plus stealthy look pretty much stock, paint them and they disguise nicely.
I have some stealthy that had a valve job done and minor working waiting for a new 383.
I'm confident it will pull hard and run well too.

I agree, I think stock heads are for stock restorations, by time you put the work into what most of them need you're a head in buying aftermarket.
