I recently posted about wiring my steering column looking for info. Just reading past post I've learned a lot. Now I have a couple of questions. Is the starter relay and the ballast resistor necessary in an aftermarket wiring kit ?

The starter relay is there for two reasons. The starter solenoid draws lots of current, and the relay relieves the strain on the ignition switch. The relay ALSO provides the means for a neutral safety (auto) or clutch safety (stick) circuit

A ballast depends on what you are using for a coil/ ignition system. MSD/ other CDI EG do not ever use a ballast
