Yep, place finger over plug hole, crank engine, compression stroke will push your finger off.

How do I know when #1 tdc is on intake or exhaust ?

I usually pull the valve cover. It I am TDC on my balancer and both vavles are closed, I am at true TDC. Hope this helps
