You know I have used the shaft out of a 8 3/4 open unit. They are a little shorter but work.

What does your case look like, at the pin-saddles? I'm guessing they are egged out. That's pretty serious damage. I wonder if your preload is set up tight enough

Do you know which open unit. I tried one out of a 741 unit. It was to long.

I've done it 4-5 times and never looked at what case I took it out of. Everyone I used was a tad bit shorter than the original. I have also drilled the opposite side of the case to install the small pin that keeps the cross shaft in place. Also the original pin is 1" by .250 in diameter. Go to your local bearing supply and get one 1 1/4" long by .250 in diameter. The factory one is really to short to begin with.

I do think I had to hone the inside of the spiders as the open diff shaft was a tiny larger in diameter. Hard for me to remember. I'm getting old.

No luck I must have sold the spider gears and shaft I just have the the cone pieces for the Sure Grip carrier

I have a good unit that the pinion came back against. The yoke came loose and the pinion put marks in the outside but it is still usable as is. $100 plus shipping for the whole unit with the races on the same bearings they came off of .
