Having switched from a tired 318 to mild 360 and changing the rear gear from 2 something to 3:55 the 833 OD just wasn't making the grade just switched out to a regular A833 all I can say is WOW what a difference . As the A833 came with shifter and linkage so all I had to change was the bearing retainer

Yeah the OD wasn't made for performance, although it can be in the right instances, the standard 4 speed is usually the better bet because of the gear ratios.

Bet the you noticed the rear gear more than the transmission. A rear gear change can be like a kick in the pants.

Can the First gear ratio be changed in an OD trans?

No. None of the Mopar boxes can be messed with, as to ratio swapping.
But there is a 3.09 low version of the standard box. I have one and I love it with 3.55s. It takes off in first like it had 4.10s. It would also work with 3.23s, taking off like 3.73s, and then you get the hi-way revs down a bit.w
