It's pretty sad when you think of it, only Buddy and his 2 band members were suppose to go, but Waylon Jennings gave his seat up to the Big Bopper and Tommy A. gave his to Ritchie Valens (they were both ill with the flu) sadly 3 great stars and the pilot died that early morning.....RIP boys.....:angel5:

All died way too young.....such a loss....

Cool, but sad thread Keith.

Did anybody notice at the end of the youtube video in thread #35 ("remember buddy on the 3rd of feb 50 years ago"), the tombstone was inscribed "Holley"?

Good eye! "Holley" is the correct way to spell his last name, early on in his career somebody misspelled his last name on a contract so he decided to just kept it that way.

Thanks for keeping this rolling Keith! As a small kid I would listen to Buddy Holly 45's over n over. Went and saw the Buddy Holly story at the drive-in as a kid. What a great movie!

No problem Steve! I do like that movie alot too, but so much of it is not correct. Same with the LaBamba movie, also great but lots of the story is not right. I think it would be awesome for Hollywood to do new films on these guys again, introduce these great stars to a new generation of people.

There is a Buddy Holly documentary that is older, but really good, all the facts are correct, even has family members and his friends in it, as well as many of the places he played and recorded in including his New York apartment where the famous "apartment tapes" were made :glasses7:

One of my mom's sisters and her friend were fortunate to see Buddy and the Winter Dance Party when they were here in Duluth and they got some pictures of them.
http://buddyhollyandthecrickets.com/WDPphotos/duluth/duluth.html these aren't her pictures but I thought they were cool.

Those guys were great.

Keith I don't know if you have, but if you get a chance to see these guys go see them they do a real good job. Saw them a couple years ago at one of the colleges here.

Very cool stuff! Never seen them before, thanks! Next year I will be going to the Surf Ballroom and enjoy the concerts there, it's gonna be fun but I have to wait a full year lol :glasses7:

Then there's the guy that always seems to get lost in the shuffle. Oh, yeah! The Big Bopper!! Not to take anything away from anyone, but he was my favorite.
KTRM radio in Beaumont, where J.P. Richardson was the program director, was playing on my bedside radio when Gordon Baxter broke in to the program with an announcement that I still remember. He said: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is a grief-stricken radio station..." Baxter went on to tell what there was to tell so soon after the tragedy. I don't remember what else was said, six weeks later was my 12th birthday.

Thanks for the memories, folks. I'd never seen that photo of The Bopper at the turntables, wavin' that hot "wax". I started my radio career at KTRM-FM 11 years later...
