I pulled my rotor off to have a closer look, and underneath it kind of stuffed into the center shaft was a small piece of felt about 1/4"x1/2". The second picture below wasn't taken right at that moment, it's a forensic re-creation of how I think I remember it looked. :eek:

Curious as to whether this is important, whether I just stuff it back in there, do something tricky with it when I put the rotor back on or ???????

felt oil wick, distributor maintenance has you putting some oil on this every so often. "...most of the cars with mechanical advance units had a wick and needed to have it and the pivot points on the weights oiled. ..." Mopar said every 6 months in 1965: "Apply three drops of light engine oil to the felt rotor wick (Figs. 44 and 45). Avoid over-oiling to pre-vent the oil from getting on the contact points. Also, apply five to ten drops of light engine oil to the oil cup"
