With Flag Day tomorrow, I was pleased to see this today...

My uncle was on board the U.S.S. West Virginia at the time of the attack but survived after swimming under burning oil on the water surface.
Although he and my aunt had a beautiful swimming pool in their backyard he could never go in water above his knees without having flashbacks to the attack.
RIP Uncle Al.

There will never be another generation like that one, IMO. I thank your Uncle for his service. Daddy was aboard the USS Hilbert Destroyer Escort DE742 from its commission to its decommission. He had a few colorful stories, but other than those, he really didn't like talking about it.

The WeeVee was hit by (I think)six torpedoes, and was counterflooded so it sank upright, unlike Oklahoma. (Even Oklahoma was refloated. The only ones still on the bottom at Pearl are Utah and Arizona)
It was refloated, rebuilt so extensively it was almost unrecognizable.
And used its radar for fire control in the last battleship vs battleship gun duel in history.
