I will be purchasing a strange s-60 complete rear package for a 70 dart. Wondering if I should have them make the rear 1 inch shorter than stock. (1/2 inch off each side) For tire clearence purposes. Would like to run 17x 8 with 4.25 back spacing. 245 45 17 tire. Thanks in advance for the input.

:dontknow:

You need to buy the wheels/tires you will be using, put them in the wheel wells and measure it.....

This is correct. I had mine built eight inches narrower to fit the wheel and tire package that I had picked out.

For my 70 Dart, I bought a Strange S60 as well. 1st I picked out the rims and tires I wanted to use, which were 17x11 with a 4.25" backspace with a 315/35/17 tire. So I mini-tubed the dart, made these fit and put them center where I wanted them, and then measured for the length of the rear. Which turned out to be 49 & 5/8" length axle flange to axle flange.

In your case, I would try to fit the largest tire I could with a mini tub. Don't limit yourself to a 17x8 with that expensive axle.

Wish I would have followed my own advice. Mine was min tubbed/springs relocated. It is set up for 5.5 back spacing. I kind of like the looks of a deeper wheel. But at this point it just has a housing under it with junk axles to roll it around. Talked to a couple different wheel guys that have stuff that I like and they are telling me that they can build the wheels with whatever bs I need so....

I have a '70 Dart with a stock width rear and 4" rear space and only have about 3/4" clearance from the sidewall to the leafspring. I am running 15x10 with 295-50-15 tires so the sectional width is going to wider than a 17 would have. Are you using mopar ends and brakes? My minitubbed car with a dana has the big ford ends on it. The axle bearings are way stronger than the green bearings. I can take some detailed photos and e-mail them to you if you are interested pm me.

I thought there was a discussion a while back about the possibility of someone purchasing this thing and then renting it out to any one who needed it? Might not help the op out but someone who already has a rear axle under the car.....Sorry for the hi-jack....

dont forget to take the breaks into consideration. drums are not a big deal because they are only 1/8" thick but my wilwood rotor hats are 1/4" thick aluminum.

Good point....and even the caliper brackets, assuming discs, can come into play....

Thanks for the input. I will be using a/m disc set up for brakes and leaving the wheel wells stock.(although) Never considered a mini tub. The car was /6 and the rear is the last piece to the puzzle. Sick of doing the one wheel peel. Thought I would have blown the 7 1/4 by now.The 8 3/4 housing I bought looks like the bearing froze or something, the surface where they go on the axle tube is scored and gouged. So I don't know if it can be used. Thats why I am thinking Strange 60 complete setup. Bolt it in and go.
