Larson's was a mens wear store, Jennestads down the street was clothing, Ross Rexall on the corner was the drugstore. The Chev / GMC truck at bottom left was an oil / gas truck that was parked in front of the "Signal" (later Shell) sign at left. This was the local oil distributor for Shell oil. In the fall of 67, a friend of mine and I were poopin around doin' nothing and starting to count gas stations, bars and churches in town. I don't remember who "won" but at the time there was roughly 20 of each, counting all independents of all sorts!!!
This was looking S on 1st Ave. This street is now one way traffic. Assuming this was 1954 I would have been 6 years old at the time
There were some interesting accidents at this corner. At the back of the photographer---this is an "L" intersection is a storefront---- before Dad and Mom were married, Mom worked at Penny's behind the photographer. One time Dad was coming toward the camera and lost a rear tire / wheel on his car. It came crashing through the window of the store, so Dad had to come in and pay!!!
On the left, the other side of the Signal sign, used to be the ID state liquor store. A log truck came around that corner toward the camera with a long load, a log wiped out a window!!! in the store. Pity any pedestrians on the sidewalk!!!!
Going the other way, in the late 60's this street was 4 lanes. A truck was turning, going the other direction, away from the camera, some kid tried to "beat the truck" around the corner, by Rexall drug. Didn't make it!!!
