when replacing a timimg cover would you use just the gasket or would you use a sealant along with the gasket like silicone, permatex or something like that. I found a small leak at the car show last week and found it coming from the side about where the alignment pin was. Just thought I would get someone else opinion on this, thanks

Clean, dry, flat mating surfaces is more important. Otherwise great big gobs of RTV wont seal it. To lightly coat the gasket with RTV serves is insurance against seepage.

I Have allways used copper coat sealant in the aresol can on timming covers, and heads and other sealing surfaces, I think it works great. If it were mine, I personally wout NOT put silicone on, but thats just a pet-pieve of mine...

If I use a gasket, I don't use any sealer. If you use RTV and a gasket the RTV may cause the gasket to slip when tighten creating a leak.
