totally new to mopar...just picked up a 68 dart to bring back to life. Drives but WAY too much play in steering. A good 3-5 inches. any suggestions on where to start and how to fix?

Welcome to the site Chach !!!!

Get the car up in the air (lift, stands, ramps etc)and check all your steering components by shaking them (tie rods, idler arm, pitman arm, ball joints)etc.
See anything loose ?

Could also be your steering box. Manual or power ?

Who knows if the front end has ever been rebuilt, its a 40yr old car, might be time.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks Johnny Dart!

I will get the car up, poke around and let you know.....

its got power steering

If It Is In The Box Itself , There Is A Certain Amount Of Adjustment By Loosening Off Nut That You Can See Looking Down At It And Tighten Up The Inside I Think It Is An Allen Key On Mine , Might Want To Check A Manual First Though Do Not Want To Get It Way Out Of Wack.

Yeah, once you check everything else it is fun to adjust the steering gear, just do it 1/8 turn at a time, if you tighten it too much you'll know it because your car won't stay in one lane.
