Power Steering Pump Noise

-
I have the borgeson kit from bergman and using the bergman coupler.. i have a tiny amount of hiss but only at center position.. I personally think it's an issue in the boxes. Lower pressure might help.. I find mine way too easy to turn anyway so will be trying it in the spring
Which pump are you running? And smaller high pressure line or larger? I’m trying to see a pattern. Thanks

Did you buy an “off the shelf” Saginaw, or the one from BAC? He says he modifies his version of them. Just curious. Trying to start figuring this out. Also, what size HP hose do you have? Mine is a 66 slant/6 and I have the smaller 1/4 line (I believe) and apparently in like 69 they made it larger 3/8.
I bought my new Saginaw pump directly from BAC.

Not sure.. it's whatever came with the kit.. i can take a couple of pics when i get home tonight if you need... I'm pretty sure its a saginaw pump.. no idea on the model

Yea, it’s probably the Saginaw if it has an oval filler neck. He wants me to buy that too, for another $400 investment between the pump, hoses and brackets, and clearly that isn’t the solution if you have the entire system and it’s still doing it. Man, so frustrating that this kit is so popular, yet has this major flaw, and there’s no solution. The steering is great, but the sound. And BAC and Borgeson point the fingers at each other and neither has a fix. BAC has been great, don’t get me wrong, but to just say “I don’t know” just isn’t acceptable for the investment. Seems like a cure shouldn’t be this hard.

Lowering the pressure costs like $5.. i would do that before anything.. another guy had posted how oemsused to put weights on the pressure line to stop noise.. which i remember seeing in the past (90s) but don't have info on.. I would do the pressure drop first though

From a mustang forum
"To those following and trying to help the eventual resolution was using a parts store rebuilt pump and Lucas PS fluid. The fault was confirmed when we reinstalled the Borgeson pump and the symptoms returned. I suspect their pressure relief is set too high."

That’s literally the guy I was talking about. Lol. I swapped to the Lucas, but made no difference. Also, I can’t adjust the pressure on the TRW pump. So, I’m at a crossroads… do I spend $200 and the local parts store for another TRW pump hoping that fixes it, or do I do all the Saginaw brackets pump for $400 and still have the noise? Lol

Can’t adjust it on this type of pump. Just the Saginaw apparently.

I would get the pump from amazon.. if it doesn't fix it you send it back as "made noise" and you are out $0....

If it makes you too nuts you could rig up a chevy type rag joint... People blame the joint but it's not the joint making noise, it just transfers it..

I was gonna switch to Borgesons “dampered” ujoint that THEY recommended, but BAC said not to… said you lose the steering feel, and the factory design is superior. ‍

Two party’s that make the parts to do the swap, and they can’t agree on the solution to a common issue. Lol

for me, not having to cut my steering shaft was a big thing... plus i don't see how borgeson using a ujoint is any less solid (and noise transmitting) than the BAC coupler...

Borgeson has a u-joint option WITH a damper built in, but I’ve heard people say they still have the noise with it. The steering joint isn’t the issue, as we all know, it’s just the speaker.

I’m fine FIXING the actual cause, OR simply silencing the SPEAKER… if any could tell me how to do either DEFINITIVELY.

Myrtle, I feel your pain and wish I had the answer. After spending a lot of money upgrading my original PS pump to Saginaw as well as the pulley and hose kit from BAC, my noise is exactly the same. Seems some of the Borgeson steering gears make this noise and others don't for whatever reason. Peter even had me try porting the fluid ports with a Dremel tool to see if that helped thinking they were causing a small restriction and making the noise. That did not help either. As Icetech mentions maybe reducing the pump pressure may help and will likely be what I try next.

To peters credit, he has offered to swap out the box to a new one. When I mentioned that to Borgeson, they just laughed and said that was not the problem. It’s crazy that between the two of those companies, somebody can’t put a finger on what the noise is. When I’m driving down the freeway with the windows down, you don’t even hear it. But when you’re sitting at a stop sign, trying to have a conversation, it’s like a radiator leak coming out of the horn button. Well, after hearing that, I don’t think I’m gonna drop the $400 just to try the different pump. Do me a favor, though, when you get home, can you post up a picture of the high-pressure line going into the box? Since mine is a 66, mine apparently has a smaller line. I’d be curious if yours is as well. Maybe there’s something with that line diameter that the other guys coincidently have the larger line that aren’t complaining about the noise. ‍

Also, some people put a spacer behind the drivers side bolt on the pump to line it up more directly with the steering column. I don’t have a spacer so you can see the slight bend at that joint, but that angle is well within good steering geometry. Maybe those that shimmer straight aren’t having the problem and us that do not shim it or having the noise. I don’t know, man, there has to be an answer here.

I don't know how to post pictures here but I will give it a try so you can see my pressure line set up. When you say spacer behind the pump, do you mean the steering gear? If so, I actually did that very thing because mine was angled just like yours. It helped line things up more directly with the column but did not help the hissing sound.

So you tried that too? Lol. I get the sense you’ve kind of given up trying and have just come to terms with it.

You’re clearly at the end of this ride, and I’m just getting on. I’m probably thinking about doing all the things you’ve already done. Damn I was hoping you had solved this so I didn’t have to.

We’re missing something here. Some people have it, some people don’t, there has to be a pattern here. I may start a new thread, asking people who installed this box a handful of questions for people to reply so we can start seeing the bigger picture. I’m a problem solver by nature. Dammit I can’t not figure this out.

Yes I think I have tried everything to no avail. I would have swapped for a new steering gear but that option was not offered to me so I have been living with it because I have no choice. I would be thrilled if you end up figuring out the root cause. In the meantime I will try to figure out the picture thing so you can see my setup.

To the left of the yellow button that says “post reply” there’s a button that says “attach photo”. Click on that, select it from your phone, and hit send. That easy.
