I have never seen a tranny cooler mounted with the fittings on top. Is there a reason for this?

Well I guess I’ll be the outlier, was just easier to install. It’s a little more of a pain to drain, but I just use compressed air.

I don't think it really matters what position it's in, it will work the same way, but it IS a great thing to have on an automatic transmission. They should ALL come with external coolers standard. The cooler in the radiator just isn't enough in my opinion. Adding one also helps make the trans last longer too. The bigger the better.
