tranny question

-
I don't know Bill what the length is as the yoke is still in the tranny. I have a car coming in tonight to be painted and I didn't want to incapacitate this Duster to the point of not being able to move it but I may have to take it outside and get it back in the air and pull it. I thought they only made 2 for a 727. 7260 and 7290. according to Dennys website the measurements for the inside of either those yokes doesn't match mine.

what the hell do I have. this yoke measures something different than either the 7260 or the 7290 yoke on Dennys website. here is what I have on mine. the inside measurement from side to side of the fingers is approx. 2". and the outside to outside measurements of the fingers is 3 1/4 ". The caps are 1 1/8 ". The driveshaft is still in the car because I am going to have to move the car out tonight but can anyone tell me what yoke this is. If I bought a 7260 or 7290 I guess they would have a joint for it wouldn't they.

I really couldn't tell you Bill, I have a couple, one is longer than the other, but the splines are the same length inside the yoke. in other words, the splines reach all the way out on one and the splines stop with excess sleeve on the other. not sure why, but they are identical U joint size. I think the six pack and hemi 727 use the big U joints and all other are the smaller type. mine are the small joints.

I would just uncap the rear and slide it out to see what you have, you wont lose any fluid

let me go pull this thing out and find out what I have here. will take some pics and measurements and post it. I wasn't expecting to get into all this today. But thanks for the help.

ok, here it is. from what I see it is a 7290. what do you think. The barrel length is 5 7/8 " long. tube is 1 11/16" wide, center of cap to end is approx. 8 1/8 ",

The big question here is: does it really matter what yoke I have? If I buy a new 7260 or a 7290, you can either use a 5-1309X Spicer joint or you can get a conversion joint to fit either yoke cant you. The problem is the joint needs replaced so I should be able to use either yoke if I buy a new one. Seems like the one with the longest yoke would be best. The one on here now does not have the splines all the way out the end. has about 1 " without no splines.

I would definitely get one that has the longest spline engagement. you have plenty of room for it. I would just order , or buy , u joints for a 74 charger 400/727 , I don't have the number handy for them.

I just spoke to the driveline people in Cincinnati I deal with and he told me that I should have 1 " at the most from the back of the tranny and I have 2.5. so I am going to have to have the driveshaft lengthened. I think I am going to replace the tranny mount today and change the u-joint and see what that does. anything more than that can wait a little longer as I don't have time to mess with it. Thanks for the info and suggestions on this. I am in the right direction. Bill
