what gives > I have never had so much trouble this time around install this 273 onto a 4 speed trans . it goes into the pilot but won't slide any further back onto the splines . all stock components 65 barracuda formula s .

put the driveshaft in the end of your 4 speed and put your 4 speed in gear. Then turn the drive shaft. That’s what @Scody21 is telling you to do. It will line up the splines.

I don't understand what you are saying.... slip yoke are automatic trans
Since you're dealing with a '65 car and transmission, you don't have a slip yoke; you have a ball & trunnion. '66 and later have a slip yoke (yes, both automatics and 4 speeds).
You still need to follow the advice, put it in gear and try to turn the output shaft a bit. You can even move the rear wheels a bit to do it (if it's on stands and the driveshaft is still connected).

Slip yoke is on yours too unless it's an early A body and even then you can turn the output shaft. Again, READ what he said and do it.

Yeah, I assumed it was a later as he say 68 Dart GTS in his profile. You’d think after 19years on here he would catch on and let peeps know what kinda crap can he’s working on…. Where’s the fortune teller at?

It says 65 Barracuda now in his OP, but I honestly didn't see it there before. Even still, the ball and trunnion IS a technically a slip yoke. I guess it's obvious to US that we're talking about the output shaft. But maybe not to everyone. Anyway, now he knows what to do.

why are you all referring to the rear of the trans . Im trying to mate the engine to the trans

apparently, there must be an alignment issue with clutch disk or
It between the clutch disc and transmission input shaft. Get the transmission in gear and then turn the output shaft so that it will turn and align the input shaft and align with the splines in the clutch disc.

we tried turn the engine .. the clutch disc turns with the engine . and it still did not slide in . just another way to turn it
