I'm in the process of rebuilding my slant six 904 transmission. And I'm putting the rear band on and it has the rectangular tab that puts tension on the band. I'm trying to figure out which direction it goes on. The book I have says that the short Shiny Side goes against anchor. This is a 1981 904 and I have attached a few pictures does it go in the direction that is almost a width of the band or does it go in the longer direction?

U have to make sure the band is hooked all the way in on the anchor. Is the adjuster backed off all the way? Kim
Yes I have have tried this for about a half hour and it will not go in long ways, the only way it will let me have it all hooked up and drop the drum in is with the rectangle going in like in the first (top) photo.

long ways seems to be to much tension even though the arm is backed off completely. if I shove it in its going to start damaging the clutch material on the band.

There is also two types of edges this picture is the direction you suggested but I can't get to work

This is the edge of the direction that I'm able to get everything in it's more rounded and it kind of seems like this would be the side you would want on the anchor and the band?

Yes the round part goes against the band and the pivot. U will know if it’s right when u adjust the band as there should be at least 5 threads showing above the top of the nut. Sorry for steering u wrong. Kim
