I have a 72 Duster automatic. I trying to replace the carpet and things. The shifter knob needs to be remove to pull the console up and over the shifting rod. I removed the set screw but pulling on the knob it feels spring loaded. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Push down & hold the black button while unscrewing the shifter knob counterclockwise. Keep your hand on the button as it's spring loaded.....

Thanks for the quick reply. Holding the black button down and trying to unscrew the knob counter clockwise the plastic knob turns but the inner chrome sleeve does not. I put the set screw back in so I don't twist the spring inside. Is it the metal sleeve that should unscrew with the knob? Thanks again for your help.

The black plastic button is a separate piece by itself. The inner chrome sleeve that you're referring to is attached to the woodgrain shift knob (1 piece)

Try turning the button and the shift knob at the same time....

Pull the set screw again 1st !!
