Tuning For Detonation

Who makes the thermostat?
Funny you ask now. I used the Edelbrock thermostat, because it's stainless and because the Stewart components thermostat is a little too big to fit the thermostat hole in the slant 6. I JUST put a 180 high flow in it a couple days ago, so the heater will get a little hotter. Kitty doesn't like cold feet. lol

My 340 @9.5 cranking only 155psi would momentarily ping if I abruptly stabbed the throttle from a cruise with vac advance hooked up @48. The vac advance cant drop off enough/in time for the big gulp of a/f and just a for a second.. makes what sounded like a single ping then it was good.
It was a 90's mopar replacement, not a performance adjustable type, made by Mallory for mopar and there were some bad ones that also were out of phase with the cap and spark scattered lighting off multiple cyls causing piston skirt scuffing in no.5 at or near bdc.

Reading through this thread again. I missed this post.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying about cranking compression and detonation are not related for the most part.

And the tip in rattle is real. I’ve never been able to tune around it but at this point I think I can, so I’m going to spend as much time as I have to to sort out as much of this as I can on the dyno.

There is certainly a time lag for the vacuum to fall and the advance mechanism to move to let the timing retard so that has to be accounted for.

Of that can be worked out at 12:1 on pump gas then it can be done at lower compression ratios and the engine will be much happier and more efficient if it has vacuum advance.
