Tuning with EGT monitor

Good day all. When I my Arrow the spare parts that came with it contained an exhaust gas temperature monitor with the thermocoupler sensors. Each header tube has a threaded bung welded in with caps. I haven't used it because I have no idea how to use it. Has anyone used a EGT monitor for tuning carb jetting, etc. ? It does work as it should as I threaded the sensors into the 7 & 8 tubes and it recorded temperature, but I have no idea what the temperature is telling me. Thanks in advance for any help!

I’ve never tuned by the egt. I have looked at the egt data to get an idea of how good the distribution is, but that’s all. Use the plugs to tune it, egt can get you in trouble, especially on gasoline. If you’re on methanol or e90 or something that doesn’t color the plug well, then the egt data can help.

2 egt’s is hard to tune with. You really need 8 and you should start on the dyno.

Then when you get to the track you have a baseline.

You can get crossed up with egt’s just like O2 sensors.

Buddies Pontiac stocker, q-jet carbs.

3 different carbs, same dyno day.
Get the known good carb dialed in, make note of the egt’s.
Tried tuning the other two carbs to a similar EGT as the first one.
Not working out. Tune the carbs based on power, egt’s between the 3 carbs vary a lot, but the power is pretty close.

That was the end of tuning with the egt’s.

Thought so. I’ve heard (never experienced) very similar things.

I don’t recall the numbers exactly, but the temps between carbs varied like 200+ degrees.
All 3 within 10hp

Never thought of tuning with egt but I really like my Innovate LM1 wide band O2 analyzer for tuning carbs.
