Turbo selection

I would have to agree that, that turbo WOULD be appropriately sized to a 318 that had some breathing capability.

Get this....

stock 8.8:1 CR short block
worked on 308 cylinder heads that have been machined to accept race type valve seals, smog ports plugged/welded, springs good for upto .580", stock 1.88/1.60 valve size, custom HUGHES cam for boost, plus around .510-.530" lift, 220/224 duration or so....Mopar Valvetrain.

double roller timing chain, Hv oil pump.

14 psi would be my daily boost level :snakeman:...till it puked...then swap all the unaffected parts over to another bone stock 318 short block.

How much power do ya think it would be making at that level?

For the heads I was thinking of kinda max porting the exhaust port and possibly tryin to go a little larger on the exhaust valve and keep the intake at 1.88". I am still gathering info at this point.
What I want is to have a very streetable turbo small block that makes lots of power, and the ability to turn the boost up when I want to.

I will be controlling the sparks with this:

hypothetically.........650-700hp at the crank :read2: 8)

I was actually considering running a stock bottom end with better pistons but even 650 HP is really pushing the crank....mo money....LOL This is my first turbo build and obviously not my daily driver so I thought about using the stock innards on the learning curve engine...LOL
If I buy a crank it becomes a 390!:snakeman:

if mustang guys 302s' with turbo(s) can sustain life at over 800hp on a stock longblock....I have no reservations that a 318 can as well...I kinda like the cheapness and low cost replacement availability of 318's anyway.

me too, and I've got two in the garage along with a 65 monaco 383 4 barrel engine w/T727...they are still bolted together the way I pulled it from the car....
that engine is destined to become a 431 turbo truck engine

That particular turbo looks to be a no-name knockoff, not a genuine Garret GT45. Could still work but I've seen some of them develop oil leaks and other issues within a few months of installation.

Yes, I know it's a copy, but that turbo has gotten a lot of good feedback from users. There is another version of the same turbo with both oil and water plumbing. It goes for $450 or so.

So how long would a KNOCK OFF turbo last you think on a Weekend Warrior?? That sure is a good price................dang

Yeah....It would last till it died. :toothy10:

You could afford (3) at the price of a PrecisionTurbo of comparble size, and (6) at the price of a Garrett GT Dual Ball Bearing.

I would use one with almost no reservation.....ok I would disassemble the cover and inspect everything...but other than that...I would use it in a heartbeat!

Make sure the exhaust AR is greater than .84 for a Single Turbo on a Mopar SB!!!!

These two look the same to me, are they?? One the first one would be about $50.00 Cheaper than the other delivered.

That's the thing...I have not seen a lot of good write ups on any other turbos that I can nail down to an exact turbo. Some people are having some good luck with smaller ones, but I'm gonna give one of these a try because a bunch of people have had good luck with them.

These GT45 Y2004K's have been doing well for a few years. I've seen video of dyno and drag passes. One of the guys has twin gt45's on a big block 67 chevy nova and has run an 8.88 at 157. Here's a dyno video and some info, you can see my convo with him below the vid on youtube.

Same guys from Dynomotive Dynos...a Wicked Barracuda!! I saw it on tv last weekend in Edmonton at an IHRA event...ran the same number...7.06!!!

Same guys using Ebay T70 on a 93 RX-7 at 14 psi....400 hp at the wheels! These cars are light and have a great handling package and drivetrain.

Many ebay turbo vids on youtube:

This guy takes a 10 mph roll and hits over 100 in 12 seconds in a honda civic with a ebay turboed sohc d16. I'm guessing that same turbo would make a neon 2.0 even faster.

Mikes TT NOVA in the Video above just sold me on doing a single one on a 360CI Small Block!

I just bought the GT45 Y2004K $308.00 with tax to California. It will be torn apart and inspected before it is ever ran.
I also picked up some FALCON H BEAM rods for the same price of $308.00 total delivered to my door.

I am going to see first hand what this TURBO is capable of! It is a Dual Scroll and I will be keeping the exhaust separated as it enters the Housing. If it can make 25lbs of boost I will be fine! Just turn the knob down right? haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Now I have to build another engine! Dang it.

I am SO jealous....but I will be watching and taking notes on your build....saving my nickels and dimes for the day I do a very similar setup!!!

I wouldn't worry about a Chrysler cast or forged cranks. They are made from WAY better material than the Ford or Chevy guys. My motor made 911hp to the rear tires with 2 T60 Turbonetics turbos. I have also made 550 to the rears with 2 T04s at 10 lbs and a stock 360 short block. Mopars are tough and turbo power is so linear that the crank doesn't get the shock like a nitrous hit or the strees from a blower pulling on the crank via the belt. Turbos are so unreal in power production its like crack! Careful you may soon be out of house and home when you start tippin the turbo! You have been warned. Oh by the way my buddies twin turbo small block chevy runs 8s on a 8 inch tire at over 160 with a pair of T04s.
