Between Waterloo and Cedar Falls where I live in Iowa is a 6 lane road that was named University Avenue. From the late 60's it is a favorite cruise "loop". The idea for the song started when the U-Haul store posted a sign to keep the cruisers out of their parking lot. It just made people hang out even more. Today, we have a car show/cruise each year with hundreds of cars. This song was written
