how much HP will a 741 case hold? I need to switch from my 8 1/4 4.10 sure grip to a 8 3/4 741 3.91 sure grip and I want to know if I should keep looking for the 4.10 or get the 3.91 he only wants 350 for it

Sweet price. I have had 450 HP to the 741 case for years of abusive driving. Drag racing the rear would be a different story.

I have a 741 case with 391's that i plan on abusing a lot! :supz:

I'd get it. There was a whole strength analysis done on 8-3/4's a few years
ago and it was quite surprising just how strong the 741 was. I think the bigger
concern with them was the tendency to strip out the axle splines due to the
engagement of the spiders onto the axles. I have some pictures of them
someplace showing the 2 different dana type posi units. The one that only
have half as much engagement was more common in the 741 I believe and
the 742's had the full engagement. Doc diff could probably give you the whole
scoop on that. FWIW I had that split type spider in my car and I swapped it
out to the full spiders. The kit was 180 bucks for that alone so it might be
worth a look inside the pig to see if they are split or not.

I picked up a 741 with a 391 SG for $200can. I was told they are fine for the street but be careful with slicks.

I run a 741 auburn 3.73 behind a 340/4spd solid cam,ported heads,headers,750 carb yadda yadda turning 68-7000rpm no problems.

clutch type is the best suregrip, the cones can't handle slicks and constant abuse as much.

ok kool, If i can sell my rear.. I will piece everything together and get a 489 case 4.10s and a clutch suregrip

.........Ive used the 741 case in my S/SS car 4 20 years, with 12.2x31.25 slicks, not 1 failure.....11.001 et................kim..........

Just keep in mind there are two clutch type sure grip units. One has full
length spider gears and the other is split. More than one guy I know has
stripped his axle splines with the split type. FWIW
