Valve spring retainer qustion

My son and I are in the early stages of building a 383 for his 72 Charger. We have purchased a set of comp cams 911-16 valve springs to go with the cam....however I have a question on the retainers. Will the stock spring retainers work? With stock springs the retainer is the same diameter as the spring. With these new springs....the retainer is a bit smaller. Should the retainers be the same diameter as the spring??

It is ok to have a slightly smaller retainer than the spring. Put em on and run it

I used stock retainers on those same springs, no troubles.

Are the retainers old? I'll be damned if I would run them if they are original. Cheap as retainers are, I would cut corners somewhere else.

..............Do not run stock retainers with those springs, if u ever seen a valve drop u know it wont be good.........kim......

while it would probably work...I didn't like the amount of spring extending out beyond the llip of the retainer. I ordered up a new set...
