Have had my car now for 2 months and got everything pretty much set up. Got the timing and carb right, thanks to this forum....put a 4:10 rear in this weekend and went for a nice long drive.
One more thing is buggin' me, though. Valvetrain noise. Not real bad, kinda reminds me of my old DZ 302(solid lifters), but I know this Purple cam is hydraulic AND there's no adjustment like on a hydraulic Chev rocker.
My Mopar buddy says 340's are known for it. I'm not quite buyin' it.
Great oil pressure, great compression, pulls real strong to 6000 RPM......what do you guys think?
I'd really like to hear from all you hardcore 340 guys.

Mike

what is the preload on the lifters set at if you have adjustable rockers?? Not enough preload gave me a ticking noise in the valve train I was trying to zero lash my hydrolic cam adding around .050 to the preload did away with the noise

Pre load on the lifters? Don't even know if I have adjustable rockers. Never had the valve covers off. Guess that's next on the list.
I thought all these 340's were a non adjustable rocker. Like I said, I'm new to Mopar. Trying to learn as fast as possible, but it aint easy getting the right info.
If they are adjustable...and I hope they are, what's the proper adjusment procedure? Kinda like the small block chevy process?

Stock 340 heads have shaft mount rockers and the stock rockers are not adjustable. However there are many after market rockers for these cars that are adjustable. You'll have to take your valve covers off and see what you have. And make sure the rockers are not hitting the valve cover baffles. Here is an article on adjusting valves:

Also, there are left and right rockers. Each cylinder head gets 4 lefts and 4 rights. Some people have, during a rebuild, put all the lefts on the left cylinder head and all the rights on the right head. This will result in alot of valvetrain noise.

You can tell if the are installed correctly by checking to see if the push rod is centered in the hole in the cylinder head. When the wrong rocker is used, the push rod is forced off center and rubs on the head.

Hope this helps

Man, didn't we just have this same subject on another thread?......well, anyway....on my 340 I run adjustable rockers with my Isky cam. But you'll have to get special length pushrods if you're running hydraulic lifters. Yeah, that seems like the correct way to do it to me.....non-adjustable rockers are for stock cams, period.
