My 74 Dart Sport has 72 Duster doors on it. (I put them on.) I'm getting the car painted. The VIN tag on the driver's door is from the Duster. Should I remove it or mask it off and keep it? The car still has the original dash VIN and the data plate.

I scrapped the original doors, and didn't keep the original door tag. But it seems like putting a door tag on a different door wouldn't be right.

The car has been roughly cloned into a 70-71 Duster- I changed the front clip, the rear body panel and the tail lights. It's definitely a Frankenstein, but it's just a LA 360 street-strip car that was a 198.

I don't see any reason to keep the door tag as it's not correct to the car, however there may be some legal issues, depending on your jurisdiction. I've changed doors before and never had a problem, but it may be different for you. In my opinion it may only create confusion to have mismatched tags.

I don't see any legal issues.

But removing the tag will case the "VOID" tamper proof stuff to show through until that nasty stuff is cleaned off.

Given that 50 year old cars can go through multiple transformations. Who would even notice or know that the doors are from another car?
Well, the only way they’d know is if there’s a non matching vin on the door. Hence, the recommendation to remove it.

Generally, the dash VIN plate or the A pillar plate is considered the legal VIN or in the case of really old vehicles the chassis number stamped in the left frame rail.

Yes. When I had my Scamp painted it had a replacement door on it. I had a new door sticker made and it matched perfectly.

This, contact the repro place that makes VIN tags and stickers and they'll jam a new one out for you. The one on the Dash is what matters, but some dickhead inspector working for the state can make a LOT of headaches for you. Especially if, God forbid, the door VIN comes back to a stolen car.

I have a 2006 Chrysler minivan to chase parts around with. Before I got it the drivers door got bent and they put another door on it and is has the door VIN from the parts van. Talk about confusion when I took it in for some work at the dealer! I scraped it off and threw it away...
