Can anyone explain in plain language ( so my CRS rattled brain can understand!) what the difference is between the W2 econo heads and the W2 race heads? I thought I had the race heads on my 382 but my engine guy just told me they're the econo heads. Don't know if I should be ticked-off or not!

Econo heads have the rocker stands cast into the head.
There are two versions of econo heads.
One that take the same length valves as normal SB heads, and one that uses the same length valves as the non-econo heads.

The ports on all of those versions are the same, when they are all of the same vintage.

The “econo” part was referring to the cost of the rocker gear.

There were many versions of W2s over the years. Econo vs race... open chamber vs closed chamber ... cast iron vs aluminum (Batten) .... long valve vs short valve ...
48 degree vs 59 Degree.... oval port vs square port .... various CC chambers .

I would like to see a complete list with variables and part #s

^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^

If you have the econo head buy the long valves and mill the stands down and use offset stands and blocks.

You do have options.

Without looking at the book, IIRC you can use the econo head up to .650ish lift. If you are using less lift than that, you can use the shorter valves and just buy a rocker geometry correction kit from B3 Racing.

You need to verify the lifer number first though.

But as far as flow goes, they are pretty much the same?

Thank you, the heads are already assembled and I ran them for half a season last year. I was just surprised when the gentleman that's inspecting the engine for me told me they were the econo heads. It could just be a case of I misunderstood what the previous owner of my Dart told me.

How did it run ?
Seemed to run fine. Strong small block. However I was about 3 tenths slower than what the previous owner had told me the car should run ( high 10.60s - low 10.70s instead being in the 10.30 range) which got us scratching our heads. We quickly agreed that the converter in the car was too tight. And we also determined (and agreed with by the engine builder) that it was down about 100HP below what it should be making. Seems like a lot to me, but I'm new to racing small blocks so I'm still learning them. After experimenting with carb jetting and valve adjustments at NED in October I got it to run a best of 10.49 at 124. So out came the engine, trans and converter and were taken down to a shop in Connecticut. The previous owner is getting the converter reworked for me. His transmission guy is installing a trans brake in the 727 and also going through the engine, as he developed this particular small package that he ran 9 second 1/4 times in a 68 Cuda and an early 80s Charger. So far the only news from his inspection of the engine is he found too much lateral movement in some of the rocker arms and he's already addressed that issue.

The list is long and would require someone having a lot of old books to search the numbers. Just to add to the mix, you could get the head loaded as well. All the ports are the same within the casting number series. IE; All first run heads are the same. Then the second run of updated ports are the same, and so on.

This is just a FYI for the general public that may not know....

MoPar never offered/cast a aluminum W2 head. There were two older places/companies that made there own aluminum W2. Batten and Diamond.
Currently, only Indy Cylinder Head has (there) aluminum versions in oval and square ports.

I forgot about the Diamonds...but I assumed that Diamond was just the foundry that Chrysler used.

I never seen MP/DC offer aluminum W2 heads.

As many small blocks guys like to say, the W5 is the aluminum W2.

Not saying I know ... just that I assumed that was the case . I kinda figured they were a short run of heads for some sanctioned body .

A short run of aluminum W2’s for a special nitch race group? Not that I’m aware of.

My W-2's are the econo version with milled rocker stands and long valves. Mine flow 294@ .600 (intake) and are ported.

No...what I am saying is that this is how I interpreted the production of Batten and Diamond heads. I don't know the whole story behind them . I have read some threads that included info from guys involved in the production but none got into specifics of marketing or who was behind the money end .

Oh! Gotcha! Roger roger!
