I have a 1978 360 bored .030, Edelbrock aluminum heads,Northern aluminum radiator with dual 10" fans mounted in a shroud, Milodon 180* thermostat, water wetter added to the coolant, 8 blade M/P water pump. My inlet temperature is higher (195*) than the outlet temperature (176*). This should be just the opposite. Running an AutoMeter electric gauge and the engine runs at 205*-208* at idle, crusing or running down the highway. I checked the temperature with a infared heat gun. The temperature sender in the intake maifold read the same as the gauge. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with "all this new" stuff........

Could you have got a pump with a reverse impeller? Do the serpenine setups drive the pump the other way?

Can you look into the rad cap and tell which way the water is going?

Infrared thermometers are not always the best choice. Clamp a thermocouple on the water pump inlet nipple lust above the hose, and wrap a bit of insulation over it. That will give you an accurate reading of the nipple.

I can point one of those infrared units in an A/C duct, and watch the thing go all the way down to 0f - when the discharge air is 36f.

The water pump is not capable of reversing the flow direction, but the wrong rotation will pump less water. Make sure you have the right pump for your drive system.
