A few trees that is......prior to us purchasing our land nothing in the way of tree maintenance had ever been done. There is a cluster of small stuff towards the back

Few years back I had some fun with the chain saw and thinned it out. Noticed the following year we had some trees that were no longer erect....one of the culprits can kind of be seen here

Last year there was a dozen or so of them laying over, but now there is only a few

anybody explain to me what caused this to happen? Just kinda wondering.....

That's what ice storms do here......if they don't break off.

Doug, loose soil an issue by chance? The "stump" might not have a good enough hold to make it stand upright.....OR poor soil, not the right nutrients to keep the wood in the tree truck at a normal density.....

I used to do Grounds work on all sorts of places and seen this be an issue only in a few places, your where tho? (Sorry I can't recall your location) but, poor soil, and not a good enough root system for the tree is a lot of times the blame...

Do you know what type tree it is?

Looks like Elm but a small one!

Area has never been disturbed, soil is tightly packed. It is very sandy in that area, but the rest of the trees are up right and have never drooped. We live in Eastern Washington, about an hour west of Spokane. It is a Ponderosa Pine, at the moment we only have one tree that is not...hopefully that changes next spring. Would really like to plant some shade trees in front of the house. Problem is they may cause trouble when backing the trailer up to the garage. Next time the truck is running I am going to put the trailer on the hitch and see if where I am planning to put them will work out. Whatever we plant will need some supplemental water as our soil drains very well and we are very arid during the summer...and with the amount of rocks we have aint no way I will do an in-ground drip system.....

Trees don't bend over when they die of disease. They are spindly from being overcrowded reaching for sun. A wet snow would be enough.

Yep.
When they don't get enough sun they grow tall and narrow so they are unable to support thier own weight.

So more thinning is in order??

Most of the time they will continue to grow, but have odd bends in the trunk.
I think if it were me I'd take out the ones leaning and leave the bigger ones.
(unless you are trying to promote new tree growth)

Of course, it's just an eye sore for the crooked ones to be there but it doesn't hurt anything other than the looks.

and thin the area out enough so that I can get the field mower thru some of it...may thin them out enough so I can get thru there with the tractor and rake...

I figure I've removed 500 - 1000 trees off my 5 acres, mostly lodgepole which tends to grow way to thick. I need to do a lot more. I try to thin so each tree can get a few hrs of sun from all directions. Not always possible when there's a mix of sizes. As they get bigger, more thinning.
Chainsaws are therapeutic :)

Sure are, fired it up the other day just to hear it run.....if the damn bike part does not show up here soon I will be firing it up here again real soon.....:banghead::banghead:

Only thing we have are Ponderosa Pines....will be planting some other trees hopefully next year but with how dry we are don't know if i am going to or not...

Doug thats a nice "Husky" you got, for Christ's sake what length is the bar on that thing? Its nearly a damned toothed pruner LOL

One thing I can say about "Husky" you don't have to ask yourself "is that thing running" at any given time, you can't hear that thing, your deaf!!!!! LOL

We have these Loblolly pines here. Ain't worth a sheeot for nuthin.

Thank You Sir....it is a 24" bar. Sorta sounds like a small dirt bike when it is running. Had a neighbor want to "borrow" it, his Harbor Freight pile-o-crap just aint cutting it...no pun intended. Have a 460 Rancher as well, it also had a 24" bar on it. Swapped it for a 16", cuts quite a bit better. But it is a homeowner grade say, the one pictured is a "professional" grade saw.

Still need to get a pole saw. Husky makes several of them. We have quite a few trees that have real heavy branches, the ends are at head height but the tree end is up to far to safely reach.

I never had a "Husky" but they are good saws, I've used them when I've worked for companies that done yard work, and ground work.....I had Poulan Saws my whole life, even the Craftsman I had was made by Poulan.....

But, you'll never hear me complain on Husky saws those things you just can't kill 'em kinda like a ole Slant 6......LOL
