Hey everyone I have a question. Not in an A-body but.....I have 1978 440 4bbl with a/c thats all stock. I'd like to replace the cast iron intake with an aluminum intake but still want the a/c. What i'd like to know is there an intake I can use that........will not hurt what little performance the motor has and still mount the compressor in the stock location? The 440 is in my 78 Power Wagon.....Thanks in advance for any help

You know,

The 1967 thru 1969 {#2806178}, and 1970 {#2951736}, and 1971 {#3512501}

Stock Factory Intake Manifolds performed very well in recent 'flow tests'.

Otherwise, an Edelbrock Performer {#2191} is the best avenue for the Street
with A/C and Power Brakes.

See if you can find an Edelbrock Performer or a Holley Street Dominator intake. Either should work well.

Edelbrock Performer #2191

Spead-Bore Carburetor {with EGR or Non-EGR}

Works good up to 5500 RPM's, and will provide about 15 to 20 Horsepower
over a stock 1978 Intake.

If you are using this truck for a truck, your best bet is probably to stick with the stock manifold. Our recent 440 dyno tests showed that a stock cast iron intake manifold is best to about 3200 rpm.

does the performer intake have the mounting locations for the AC? I know my CH4B was missing 1.

1978 Mopar 440 Intake {#3830733}

The Edelbrock Performer #2191 has the bracket-bolt mount for the A/C Pump,
and is about 35 lbs. lighter.

I have the stock 440 in my 78 d300 and I do use it to tow. Bone stock it was very very slow would gtec. In the low 18s installed the eddy performer intake, a set of hedmen headers recurvered the distributor. And msd ignition. And yes the ac is still all there and works great. Truck now runs very high 15s. And she pulls like a beast. Very fun to tow with. I would suggest the performer intake

Summit K6400 cam kit. 214/224 @.050. Would HIGHLY recommend, a real double roller timing chain. The late model stock replacement stuff,usually retards cam timing(kills low end,mid range torque.).

Cool thanks for the info everyone.....I was thinking about headers and a different distributor down the road. For now looks like I will hunt an Eddy intake down

A-Man,

That's a good cam.

Melling makes one too, which is not too bad cost wise.

We use them in the light-to-medium duty Trucks and RV Mopar Big Blocks.

#MTD2
.420" / .443" Lift
278* / 288* Duration
204* / 214* Duration @ .050"

1200 - 4700 RPM Range

Tis,a goodie 440 Cuda. Crane/Mellings usually grind the camz,for Summit.

Forgot to tell you the rest of the combo
750 holley with a one inch spacer which is only on there to help with the hot restart

And thanks for the cam suggestion I will look into that one

Go get it,Heavy. The idle,will be smooth, tailpipe slightly more authoritative.

RRR, and a tunnel ram too!

I like the Mopar Performance dual plane M1. It specs out the same as the cast iron from 68,just aluminum.

Is it me or does a cam with 278/288 duration seem like it wouldn't be the ideal towing cam?

It depends on where they measured the advertised duration from. Some cam makers will measure it from 0 or close to make the cam appear bigger than it is.

thats advertized... usually seat to seat or upwards of @ .020. The @ .050 with a 204/214 is perfect!

Exactly. IMO, I think a 114 LSA would have been a little better for towing, but I am sure 112 works well.

he should even look at the Torque Monster cams from crower. our .030 over 440 with i think a 9.3:1, Cali legal aluminum instake and TQ made 550tq at something like 2500 and 400 hp at 5000 lol. for our 78 Crew cab, short bed dodge truck, very rare!

There's a guy runs around Macon has a 68 Power Wagon crew cab short bed. It's a 383 truck with the NP435. I never seen another one.
