What ball joints are any good anymore?

-
I bought some steering parts a couple years ago from Rockauto. They were really nice pieces but I need to look at them again. They were either Delco (I think) or Delphi. Made in Taiwan

I see TRW got bought out by ZF. Just a FYI

how long ago? I have bought a bunch of "old" TRW over the past few years.
I would have to Google it to find out when it got sold. I sold TRW back in the late 70's.

zf is/was good stuff
moog was good found 75% of their stuff is junk anymore and sometime 2x the price
"old stuff is the good stuff " but hard to find ...sad when your used good stuff might be better then new
i'm going to need 69 disk brake bjs .........sad

It is very unfortunate. Moog was at one time the best of the best of aftermarket chassis and suspension parts.

trw is oe on a lot of euro cars
what i have found if its oe to the make its usally good ,when they expand to other makes the out source to china crap
it sad cause too many times i find i'll buy 2 moog bjs and they don't even match .....
china/rock auto/internet and most any parts suppliers fall into the cheap parts sell better
i know too many "tire shops " will buy cheap and sell at good parts list ,i just and my margin to what i sell and install and only when i can't find the best parts
or if i'm working on a total pos will i sell the cheap part

I have a bunch of Moog in the attic, not a one of which says anything but made in USA.... might be old stock but it'll still work. I havent gone to the corner parts store and bought any front end parts for anything Ive worked on here at home in quite a while. of any brand. as long as I can find old stock at Ebay and RA, and dont need something "NOW" on the side of the road sort of thing, I'll continue to buy my parts that way.
just bought 4 ball joints from them on Ebay since I've been watching this thread explode tonite... cheapest listings there were, but oldest looking ones on there. some listings were more than double the money.... one page of K7025 and every listing was $58.something each. same with K778. I listings for a pair of each for less than $50 each pair... ALL USA.
other parts I found some old NAPA that listed Dana/Spicer on another side of box... i wonder how long since they supplied NAPA with suspension parts...
Ive seen it on the shelf but Ive gotten exactly 2 Chinese Moog parts, ever. The inner tie rod ends on my 96 Dakota 4wd. and I cringed as I put them on about 7 years ago. but so far they've done the job. I recently gave the truck to my kid, he hung a plow on it last fall. Well see....
I have 100k on a Moog front end on one of my Durango's... everything is still good. the PO did the front end (or had it done?) with "mystery parts" before I bought that unit. I could tell it was all new as I looked at it before I bought it.
I dont like Chinamade either. I dont like Japanmade, Korea made, or Taiwanmade either. I refuse to buy a vehcle made from any of those places either.

A decade ago .. when we were making their seat belt components we refered to TRW as Terrible Rotten and Worthless.
Yeah they were crap for a long time. But I well remember the 70s and 80s you could go to a Napa store and get actually good quality TRW engine parts.

Here's one. This is a good seller. A few months ago he had a pretty good stash, but I think he's been picked over pretty good.

This is the left side. The right side is K7021.
If you find drum brake ball joints, you can drill out the holes.
Lower Ball Joint Moog k7023 fits CUDA '65-69 Dart Valiant 1966-70 NOS USA | eBay

These are drum brake ball joints. They would need to be drilled out. Also from a good seller. If you put these in your cart, in a couple days this seller will send you a discount offer.
TRW 10181 10182 Front Right & Left Lower Ball Joint Set - FRONT DRUM BRAKES ONLY | eBay

Thanks Todd, are the trw for our cudas? I did the "vehicle fit" chk, and they claim to not fit?
I'm afraid the lower bj I'm struggling to remove may be buggered....or it will be by the time I'm done with it.. :BangHead:

Steve, I believe they do. I don't know why the fit check doesn't work, but there are other cross references that say they exchange.

These links say (Right side) Moog K785=TRW 10181 and (Left side) Moog K787=TRW 10182. I know they look hinky, but I've found them to be right in many instances, and I've never been able to prove them wrong.

Some of the forgings are Canadian! :canada: I've seen this before.

*Edit-
I should have included a link that shows the application. Even though listed as not available, Summit has the Moog K787 application table still up.

I'm late to this thread. However thought you all might find my experience junk ball joints amusing. It was Moog to the rescue.

I got this today from local parts store. Everything "looks" good so far. Turns out the oem 9/16 bolt fit perfect, so for disc brakes. Tie rod hole is tapered as is oem, but hole is smaller topside.
Lifetime warranty!

Carquest moogs seem to be good in my 4x4. I've heard ups and downs about mevotec, I want to say their entry level stuff I used sucked.

I have had luck with Mevotech, but with their premium brands on our import dad's, Hyundai and Kia. I was surprised they offered it for our 67. Found them on RA, then went to local and found them for $10 more. Had it in 4 hours. We will see.

I didn't want to try Mevotech, but they were the only ones who made an aftermarket sway bar link for our Jeep. The plastic OEMs wore out in 15K miles. Those steel Mevotech links are beefy and are what should have been on the Jeep in the first place.

mevotech used to have a low line (and still may?) that was the same vatozone, o'really's & crapa bargain basement hong kong phooey junk. their "original grade" is better than that, but it can be hit or miss depending on the application.

the "supreme" line hasn't done me dirty yet.

I questioned Dave at parts store and he highly recommends Mevotech premium line. Lifetime and all steel construction inside apparently.
I believe there is still a lower line of Mtech. I priced bjs for our 17 Ram and it was like $10-15 more for premium.

Funny cause I've never heard of that brand
Wonder if its one of the reboxed name brands

Most ball joints that don't have nylon guts are very hard if not impossible to move in your hands. I've had the ultra cheapies be so tight once installed that the truck pulled whichever way you last turned. Solved by replacing with MOOG.
Next time post the brand/part number. I might pay extra for a ball joint that tight.
We're on the same page there ..
But I've been using MOOG without issue for too many years now and have seen issues with the rest.... I'm in the middle of a complete tear out rebuild of a D250 right now.... Just changing everything because I'm in there.
I've seen the issues you mentioned with the rest. . You see a bunch from under the alignment rack .. but I just don't see the issues with MOOG everyone else claims..
Not saying they don't have a bad batch sometimes everyone does. But I use what works.
I've had regrets over the OE ball joints I've left in the scrap yard for awhile now. I always thought new was better. Come to find out, better is better.

Can you please post a picture of the parting line? I suspect those are cast and not forged
