What Champion Plug ru Using in you 340?

Other than temperature range how does a race plug help mitigate detonation?

It’s mostly temperature but it’s internal changes to the plug like how tight the center wire and such.

I know that affects how the plug sheds heat.

Edit: I’ve forgotten some of this stuff. Thinking on it, a race plug uses a different cement to seal the center wire to the porcelain.

On a race plug you know you are getting jiggy with it when you see that cement (Champion’s word not mine) start to boil out from the porcelain.

You know you are on the edge when that happens and it’s a different cement for the street plugs.

I have to think on it. I’m sure there is other things I’m forgetting.

I was wondering what effect a plugs projection has. After some research I found this. A double edge sword. Tuning for plug projection would mean to me you have everything under control. Needless to say I doubt Ill ever get to that point.

“A longer projection can help place the spark further into the combustion chamber, which can improve the flame propagation and reduce hot spots that lead to detonation. On the other hand, if the wire projection is too long or too short, it can cause uneven combustion or even promote detonation.”

“With a high compression engine, the combustion chamber temperatures and pressures are much higher. In that case, you often want a shorter projection so that the spark plug’s electrode sits a bit further away from the hottest part of the chamber. That helps prevent pre-ignition and detonation”
 
The centre electrode of the spark, if it is too hot, can cause pre-ign. It can be so hot, it, not the spark, ignites the mixture which causes pre-ign, which THEN causes detonation.
However, in my opinion, the spark plug is often blamed for the pre-ign when it is actually a glowing carbon particle in the chamber that is the cause.
