What Does "Reasonable Offer" mean?

-

My mom used to sell trinkets at a flea market. When the people made half price offers, she RAISED the asking prices.
How much for the dinner plates?
Those are $15.
Okay, I'll give you $8.
Sorry, they are $18.
What? I thought that you said $15 ?
Okay, make it $20.
She was good at detecting cheap people so she decided to mess with them since a sale to them was a losing effort anyway.
Yeah there is nothing worse than people negotiating a low price when its already a good deal. If its an item that's hard to sell or is difficult to value then fine. She was right to weed these people out quickly. My usual approach is to not respond. Sometimes I list an item as firm and I still get offers :)

This I 100% agree with. If something is a good deal already, I won't even ask. I'll buy it if I need it. But then, we get into "What is a good deal?". That's just as subjective as "What is a reasonable offer?".

Exactly. People are way too ready to get "offended" by anything. Don't like an offer on something for sale? Just say no and move on. Sellers who act like they are doing the world a favor are wrong as wrong can be. The buyer is the one. Be glad you have an interested party. Be thankful. Don't like an offer? Then just say no or make a counter offer. Getting all pissed off is just childish and stupid.

Yeah, I put up a 383/400 M1 intake for sale about a year ago. I think I started it at $350 having no idea what I'd get. Some jackwad sent me an offer for $50 and I simply responded "Um... no"... thinkin that would be the end of it. Nope, he persisted to give me crap for selling obsolete technology and that he only wanted it as wall art for his "man cave". I simply blocked him and that was it. Was I offended? Nah, annoyed that it went any further than "Um.. no"... a bit.

Point is, if someone tells you no, move on or adjust your expectations and change your offer.

For some reason everyone knows when it's a good deal and if you blink it's sold. If your wondering if the price of an item is too high time will tell........

Yeah. Now that was just a stupid offer.

Usually, seller holds all the cards. His item, he prices it. Only time a buyer has the upper hand is if the seller is in a financial crisis and needs cash fast, or they are moving and it "must sell". I've adjusted the price (or not make any adjustments... lol) just off of attitude.

If someone says $1,000 or reasonable offer, which obviously means No to all unreasonable offers and you still waste their time with an unreasonable offer who's being the dick ?

My buddy got a good deal on a mustang cause of that, he showed up with a 3rd of the asking price in cash, guy laughed him off his property then a few hours later guess the guy's wife came home and made him take it, they were moving in the next couple of days, it had to go.

If the asking price is way out of line I usually don't even bother throwing an 'unreasonable' offer. Its unlikely the seller is going to accept it. Some people would but I can't be bothered.

I wouldn't call anyone a dick making an offer. If I didn't like the offer, I'd just say no.

The power of a wife's finger wagging in his face!!!

I always wonder what someone is up to (mainly Facebook Marketplace) when I get a message '$100' with nothing else...no words. Typically these are lowball offers.

Yeah. Now that was just a stupid offer.

Funny part is I bought it in 2012 for $100. Never sold it, rather I traded it, and a set of e-body hooker stainless headers I got for free along with $20 for a brand new AMD cuda door skin, and an entire A/C duct set for an e-body. So, for a $120 investment, I ended up with what I could actually use vs "Wall art".

Yes, that has happened more than once.. lol. Generally, if I want something gone fast, I price it low. Sometimes way low. At that point, I expect to get my price.

Now that was a good trade.

You may have more patience or maybe you're not as vindictive as others. I don't know.
Sometimes you can just tell that the "buyer" is an asshole that disrespects everyone that he encounters at a swap meet.
Last Summer I had this young guy come by the house, Persian in nature.
Now, I'm not making this racial but instead, cultural. In some cultures, the bargaining for goods is a custom and is respected among them. For them, paying the asking price is NOT respected or commonly done.
It is here too to a point but when I set a price for a part that is about what I would pay if I needed it....and the "buyer" offers a fraction of that price, I'm going to be pissed.
THIS guy bought several things from me at a swap meet while he openly admitted that I had stuff priced much lower than others at the meet. He came to the house a week or so later for stuff I didn't bring to the swap meet. I worked him a really fair deal on a bunch of small parts totaling $90, then he saw that I had an original but almost perfect rear seat for a Duster/Dart Sport. This assclown offered $100 for the parts if I included the rear seat.
Really? A seat that would cost you over $500 to duplicate with new skins and this idiot essentially offered ten dollars for it? I was polite but said no.
He called a week later and before he could get three words out, I calmly told him that I won't sell anything to him anymore because he made a completely unreasonable offer that pissed me off. I said goodbye and then blocked his number.
I'll do that to anyone that is dumb enough to make an offer that is just too stupid to consider.

Reasonable has many definitions. So, unless it's defined, who knows what reasonable is?
To me it's pretty self explanatory but yes it's open to interpretations, to me if someone say's a $1,000 or reasonable offer were talking lowest offer at worse $700/750.

Sure your free to offer what you want but if you low ball your purposely wasting the seller's time. Same if they say no trade and offer a trade, or got a sign not for sale or hire and you still try to buy or hire, , It might work out for ya but your obviously not respecting what the seller asked.

here is the one that gets me most. And this happens. Somebody approaches one of my classics and asks how much? Mind you, it's not for sale, wasn't advertised, just my vehicle and they decide they like it. I shoot them a high number because it's "not" for sale. They proceed to tell me I'm out of my mind, then offer not even a fair price. Then I remind them "it wasn't for sale, but you wanted a price and you got one". Now, I just tell them "it's not for sale, so offer a price and see if you like it more than me". Usually, they don't offer just walk away.. and if they do offer (usually not even fair price) I just say "I guess I like it better than you" .. lol

How much of my time is farkin "wasted" here trying to help as many people as I do? Talk about an absolute cop out. Wasting time my big old butt.

I had that happen to me once. I had a semi-restored jukebox that a friend of a friend heard about via word of mouth. Said jukebox wasn't for sale, as I still had some bugs to work out on it, but when I crossed paths with these two at a show, I was asked, "How much for your 1448?" I told them it wasn't for sale, but you know the drill, and they kept pushing, so I "upped" the price in my head and said, "$8,000", thinking this would shut them up.

Nope. Guy pulls out a wad of cash and starts counting it out, so I had to "put up or shut up".

And I did....while laughing all the way to the bank!

Haggling for price is as old as the worlds oldest profession, well maybe a few minutes less, but that's when it started.

If you're not prepared to haggle, maybe don't sell? It doesn't matter what we say as sellers, people are not usually going to "want" to pay what you're asking for a two simple reasons.

1. They like there money and the more they keep, the more parts they can buy.
2. The assumption is everyone overshoots prices when set assuming the act of haggling.

Money talks, bullshit walks. That's a good sell for sure.
