YUP. There has been countess ruined brake shoes and damage to cars because people left the parking brake applied, ruined the brakes, and could not stop
"Back when," my Grandparents owned two Chrysler products (early 50's) with "fluid drive." First my Grandma would leave the brake on (drum on the driveshaft) and ruin the parking brake. Then, next time around, there would BE no brake and the car would roll when parked. She ran one off a 20' bank at the neighbor's driveway and wrecked that one, the other rolled down a steep hill.
AND she darn near burned one car to the ground when she drove down the road, brake on, and the brake and grease under the car caught fire. There was a pond nearby, and a passing neighbor honked and got her to stop, then ran her car down into the pond!!!!
Was she a poor driver? YES
Would a great big warning light have helped? Maybe
