What Is A Formula 'S' Package 'Year to Year'

-
I appreciate your response. My fender tag shows "31255" which is correct for a 1965 Formula S.

I understand that the wood grain steering wheel and Rallye stripes were both options, as was the small center console which my car also has. I am merely wondering if anyone either owns or has seen another 1965 Formula S without a dash-mounted tach?

That small center console was stock for any floor-shifted auto (Signet, Barracuda or Dart GT only) in 65. Others might chime in on a Formula S w/o the tach

I can honesty say, that I never saw a 1965 Barracuda 'Formula S' without the 'In-Dash' mounted Tachometer.

Ron,

Here are the NHRA National Records at the end of 1964

The Barracuda 273/235 HP ~ would fit into F/S or F/SA {12.50 to 13.99 Wt/Hp}

F/S........... 13.80 @ 101.23 MPH
F/SA......... 14.18 @ 98.35 MPH
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Barracuda 273/180 HP ~ would fit into I/S or I/SA {15.60 to 16.99 Wt/Hp}

I/S.......... 14.84 @ 92.07 MPH
I/SA........ 15.22 @ 89.90 MPH

I assume, the way to read this
31 = code 31 - 273 4-bbl commando engine.
2 = code 322 Formula-S package
5 = code 365 auto trans

Our '65 Barracuda is an odd ball in that its a completely bare bones 273 Commando 4 speed car, manual brakes/steering, no sway bars & thats about it for the options besides a single outside mirror & AM radio. :glasses7:

Neat - it looks like they went for the 273 4-bbl engine over the Sport or Formula-S accessory groups. Save a couple spots the floors look really solid!

Called these Rallye Pack cars- only Commando 273- even had 13" wheels.
Had one with auto and a/c

1965 'non' Formula S

The 1965 Barracuda 273/235 HP 'Commando' was a highly protested car in the NHRA during 1965.

Classed in F/S or F/SA.

They were called an 'Illegal Fish'.

Several Protest Reasons;

1} The 1965 Barracuda came from the 'factory' with the 7 1/4'" Rear-End with 3.91 Gears as the Maximum
option.

2} Plymouth offered the 8 3/4" Rear-End as a 'warranty replacement unit' only, and not as part of the standard
option.

3} The 8 3/4" Rear-End became available as a late-year 1965 Production installation.
