    I have a 65 A100 with a slant six 225. I'm confused as to the correct orientation of the dip stick handle. When I put it in one way, the oil reads beyond full. When I flip the handle and install it the other way, it reads oil is low. Is the dip stick in the correct orientation if the markings on the stick face me when I pull it out, or is it correct if the markings are on the opposite side of the stick when I remove it to read how much oil I have?

    Something's screwy; you should be getting the same indication whichever way you put in the dipstick. Sounds like it might not be seating all the way in the tube when the handle is such that it reads low.

    Do you wipe the stick when you first pull it out, stuff it in again, pull it and read or just the one time? Does that statement make sense?

    That statement just sounds to kinky to me, LOL.

      I used to see that on vehicles all the time.
      There's two things at play;
      1) The stick goes into the oil at an angle, and
      2) if the end is bent, then it will show, hi/low just as you describe,and it can vary quite a bit.
      So you can't do anything about the angle deal, but you can straighten out the stick.
      Or, What I do is orient the stick with the bent end trying to enter the oil as vertical as possible, and mark the handle as to which side is now up.I use a paint-marker.
      Then to calibrate it, you do that at the same time as you do an oil and filter change, and after the oil has bee brought up to temp. This is the only time that you know for sure that the correct amount of oil is in the pan.
      So; with the vehicle on a flat level surface,you dip it, and find the level, and mark it, and file a notch on the edge. Now you know the correct level. To make an add mark, I'll let you figure that out,lol.

        Drain oil, change the filter, refill the oil to the correct level, and whatever orientation reads right...is right

          It could be your dipsick is an aftermarket brand and is not properly seeding into the a dipstick tube.

              It's not how your stick dips, it's how you dip your stick that counts!

                I'd even speculate that as the dipstick is pulled out that it may rub the oil off one side, bends etc.

                  As long as there is oil on it you are good. Or split the difference.
