What is the best sounding cam to put in a 416 stroker!!

I have a 69 shortblock 340 that is getting stroked to a 416 the stroker kit is from scat. I am looking around for cams and want a loud cam i bought 3 inch flowmaster 10 series but i want the car to be loud and i don't know what cam would be the best for the 416.

My dad is planning on buying a hydraulic cam but i told him to look into a solid from hughes. What is the best cam for the engine.
 
post all the specs on the engine and the car...including gearing and converter...


intake manifold..carb....

race car ...street car?
 
I need the compression ratio, rear gear, carb, exhaust, ignition and tire size you plan to run and is the intended use street or strip ONLY!
 
I've been down this road before years ago so don't feel to bad. I wanted a cam that sounded good but the engine was pig "slow". You can have a nice sounding cam and have plenty of Torque and Horsepower but more info is needed so these guys can send you in the right direction.

Roger that Ax. I've done it too. :oops: Everyone makes mistakes.

Am I allowed to say that I was 19 and the only resource was the library?
 
72 Duster, 4 speed, 4.10 rear, 28'' tire, motor will have air gap intake, most likely 850 or larger holly, comp ratio around 10 or 10.5, mallory hyfie 6 ignition, 3" exhaust, flowmaster 10's, no headers yet
 
Maybe one of the comp mutha thumpa grinds would work well for you. Comp has a great reputation amongst the mopar community.
 
check out comp cams cam recomdation ap on their web page that might help you also to decide what to run
 
If your only buying it for the sound get the biggest solid roller you can stuff in there. It'll probably won't outrun a stock Honda Civic but at least it'll sound tough. BTW: if loud is what you want why run mufflers?
 
running a certain cam just for sound is silly...you want the best cam for your intended use and have it match perfectly with the rest of your combo....usually most well put-together-stroker engines where everything is matched will sound good...
 
You need the right cam for your combo, not the one that sounds best.

The money was spent for a 416, don't toss it away.

If you just wanted a bad *** sound, you could have simply over cammed a $250, junk yard 318.
 
I am in the process of buying a 416 from mackin that has a comp cams 292H "nostalgia purple" cam. That cam is supposedly made to give a lumpy idle. I have no idea what cam is in my 340 but it definately has that sound! I may put the top end from this stroker onto the 340 just to see if the cam sound changes much when the heads allow the engine to flow.

The power it made with ported eddy RPM heads, victor manifold, 830 holley is (corrected, RPM, TQ, HP):

Is that wimpy? Theengine may have made more power with a different cam but until I try, who knows. We'll see how it does in the fish. Can't wait!

Ask Tony Fields how over camming for the idle sound worked out - at least for fuel milage.
