What is this clip / spring for on gas pedal ?

Anyone know why this clip / spring is for and how it is supposed to be installed ? My throttle cable broke today on my 69 dart and when it did this clip came off Off the gas pedal. I can’t seem to figure out how or where exactly it’s supposed to go where it seems to do anything ? Have a new cable in order now. Thanks for the help

I believe it is to prevent a rattle and as was said in post #2. I had the same issue a couple years ago.

Mine fell off a while ago. I haven’t noticed any difference lol

Thanks everyone. I ordered a new cable from year one since nobody local had one. I’ll put this back together in a couple of days.
