What is this for and is it needed?

Hi everyone. So I'm about to paint my engine bay on my 73 dart swinger (5.2) and don't know what this part is for. Can I remove it or is it needed? I'm running a new Kwik Wire Harness and i am trying to tuck everything hidden away. I noticed it had an electrical connection to it? (Sry if my 5yr old sons finger is blocking any thing in the pic. Hes my trust worthy helper..)Gratci

It's a little tough to see in the pics, but it looks like a brake proportioning valve. If it has wires coming from it those are likely for a line lock.

And yes it is needed or your rear wheels will lock up when you brake.
 
Yes you need it, it directs hydraulic fluid to the front and rear brakes! The wire is for the dash brake idiot light that tells you the brakes may not work the next time you use them. Anytime the brake system has an issue, nice to have!
