what is this on the underside of my dash?

I just starting stripping out my 66 Formula S and saw this round electrical attachment under the dash, pulles apart lots of cars but can't say I've seen this before and couldn't seem to see it in a wiring diagram, I will feel dumb when I find out !

If there is a seven digit part number on it, research it to see what it shows up as.
 
It’s the tach sending unit, and they’re relatively hard to find. They are also usually not working because of their components being 50 years old. Bonus is that there is a new solid state replacement board available that fits right into the can.

I had a 66 Formula S and sent the tach and sending unit to Sterwart Warner for repair back in 1992. Destroyed by UPS. Too young to know I should have insured it. They gave me 100 bucks. Good luck.
 
sweet , thanks guys,didn't think of that one, might see if I can find out how to test it while it's out
