i'm dealing with the local gear shop and got a guy totally stressed. i pulled the axles out of my car [75 dart sport] and need new ones. the guy is telling me he can't look back that far and even if he knows the measurements he can't get a part #. can anyone tell me what other newer [80's]cars or trucks that rear end may have come in, i know 1/2 tons but i would imagine there wider?

I think you may have to go after market. Newer Jeeps G Cherokee and Liberty have 8 1/4's but The axle lenght is different. Dakota's also have 8 1/4's different lengh as well. I believe axle length is around 28 inchs for an A body and a Liberty was 29 ¾’s .I would ask on here if some one has axles or call an auto wrecker You could try Yukon, or Strange, Moser to name a few.

So if these vehicles have an 8 1/4 then I could find a donor gear set in one of them? Yes?

Someone told me the gears from a dana 44 will work in an 8 1/4 as well. Is this true?

Sorry for jumping your thread like this 11.2, but enquiring minds must know!

what wrong with the ones you pulled out you may be able to go to a junk yard they have inter change books and an on line search an find used axles that way

No Dana 44 gears will not interchange with an 8.25

11.2 I doubt you'll be able to find any newer 8.25 rear that has the same axle dimensions as your car. I had a 93 Dakota with the 8.25 but it was at least 4 inches wider than an A-body rear. Like Keith Mopar said aftermarket or used original equip. is the way to go. I've seen them listed (good used ones and aftermarket replacements) on E-bay allot. Maybe try posting in the want ad section on this board.

I have an 8 1/4 from my 83 M body cop car but I think it's wider than an A body.

dart64: i may take you up on that offer, i will check with the wreckers here on tomorrow and after i surely strike out i will pm you. i need 27 spline x 27 3/4'' long x 1.62'' wide through bearing.

What about the older Jeeps. like the Rubicon and TJ...I heard their 8 1/4's were only about 1" wider than the A body ones, somebody here runs them and they work great...........Just another option
