My carb arrived back from Woodruff, so I need to look for a complete round air cleaner assembly. I am running a 1/2" spacers under the carb

I see they sell 9", 10", 14" (etc) round assemblies........the larger the filter, the more air

What size will be able to feed the motor with the air CFM that it needs?

I will obviously need to mount the carb and the spacer, to measure how tall I can fit

Not concerned about it looking OEM/Stock...........I want a round open element setup

After mounting the carb and spacer, I think I am going to def have to use a drop base

I am going to tape a string to the top of each fender and measure the distance to the top of the carb.........should give me a rough estimate for how tall of an element I can run?

I guess I need to also figure out how much of a drop base I can run without interfering with any linkages

Simple. The biggest diameter you can find, with the tallest element you can get under the hood. The question is.... taller filter on a drop base, or a shorter filter on a flat base. I would run a drop base and the taller element, for the more filter capacity, though the drop base MAY give up some horsepower.
As an aside, i bought a car with the phony "injection scoop" on it (no hood, the valve covers are higher than the fender.) It had the 2nd worst filter from that engine masters episode, hiding inside it. It was gone the first day i owned the car, replaced with a 14x3 flat base k&n style filter. It actually made a difference you could feel in the seat of your pants.
Big blocks and 5x3 filters dont get along well.

A 14 inch round is super popular and has a huge verity or heights available. Stroll on over to Summit Racing and use there side bar search.

The one thing I learned is the carb needs about a clear 2 inches above the choke horn in order to breath well. When you shorten the height above it, the air has to turn harder and tighter. Since air has weight, it doesn’t like to turn.

I run a Mancini Racing drop bass with the ribbed MP lid. The filter height I can’t remember off hand. I’ll source it later if you want. But I do not have a spacer under the AFB.

I have the B&B aircleaner that was #9 in that engine masters test. It did quite well, and probably would have done even better with a taller element. It has a nice reverse-velocity stack design for the lid.
But..... mine is on a shelf in my garage, cause i never found an application that i could use it on. The EXTREME drop base interfered with every throttle linkage and fuel line connection i tried. The 2"+ drop is just too much.

Is it the stock hood and what carburetor are you running? Does it have a choke tower?
