I have a 185 thermostat in my 340. It stays right about there most of the time. Do I need to go up to a 195 or is 185 good enough for operating temp?

I don't think I have seen a 185°. 180 or 195. 180° is my favorite.

In my 340-4speed with factory rad, factory clutch fan and fan shield- I run a 180 and she stays consistent cool even on the hottest days. 3.91 rear gears. So she is screaming most times. Lol!

What does the Factory Service Manual call for?

All of the clearances in the engine were designed for that temperature and range

180 or 195 according to the FSM

Looks like 190 was standard except for 318-383 2bbl.

And to the 160 deg crowd...
Says it right there! "NOT RECOMENDED"
