I'm running some ideas in my mind on my 1970 Dodge Dart Build. One hand says inexpensive paint, vinyl roof, bumble bee stripes fix what's broke and drive it. The other says hell no! Put a 360, nice auto tranny with ratchet style floor shifter and 8 3/4 rear, new paint, nice wheels & tires setup.

What would you do?!

Inquiring minds want to know :burnout:

Thanks, Randy

keep it a running driving car! do what you can when you can. i tore my car apart 12 yrs ago and just drove it again for the first time this summer. most guys have big dreams and tear into projects and they loose interest, motivation, money, time or storage and then they part em or sell them. that is my .02. I would drive it and enjoy it. make changes as you can.

I would do exactly what you have in your sig pig if you have the coin to do it in a reasonable amount of time. If its going to be a 12yr project like stated above, just build a 360, tranny, and get the wheels/tires you like and drop them in over a weekend :burnout:

I like the way you think.

Yep. Just gather every single thing you need.

I agree, big time. Take it from one who knows. Anyway, "patina" is big right now.

I agree, fix what you have to and drive it. That's what I did. To me, the wheels made all the difference and was the easiest thing to do.

X2, fix and update what you have and wait on paint for the very last thing
That's my way anyway of thinking :thumblef:

Paint and shine comes last

Drive it.
I drove my duster in the garage this past March to pull the motor, paint the engine compartment and change the steering box.
It snow balled and now it is sitting with two bare frame rails with the front suspension still attached.
I need to strip the fire wall, weld in new inner fenders, and radiator support, then I can paint the engine compartment.
I should have left it alone until this winter, that way at least I could have drove it all summer.

I vote no vinyl top.

Unless you enjoy chipping crusty rust and welding odd sharp angles.

Vinyl tops cause rust. they hold in moisture big time. this causes rust along the sail panel seem which is a PITA

If you have to have a vinyl top, do the trim and paint can give the look of a vinyl top.

I've seen several cars lately that had thick, penetrating rust along the very edge of the top, above the front and rear windshield. Not pretty at all.

fix and make everything you do to the car the best you can, make the car exactly the way you want it then save up for a complete disassemble and paint and detail so it doesn't take 3 years to do.....if you have followed any of my threads this idea will sink in that I drove em into the shop running and driving in some instances and commenced to beautification and reassembled detailing along the way

No matter which way you go I would not be using a ratshit shifter.....Gate style for me...

Oh sure typical of a vinyl top, my car won't be driven in the rain anyway.

Some parts ordered, don't even have the car yet! It's being shipped from Florida.

I won't be taking 3 years, months more like it............told myself I wouldn't do a long restore, last one was too long then sold it.........I'm a driver.

Thanks for your input

You wash your car don't you. Vinyl tops don't care where the water comes from, water is water be it from a hose or from the sky.

Factory console shifter. My suggestion. Much prettier looking for a mild performance car.

I am in the middle of a near restoration and it is frigging killing me with the time it takes to get progress and closer to the road.

Once cleaned/wax no I don't wash any of my cars. I use a detail spray.

Vinyl top rust is from years of driving in the rain hence the water under the top, there are ways to lay down sealant so the leading edge doesn't get the spray.

Take a piece of metal outside, lay it down put water on it and cover. Watch what happens.
That said to each their own. No way I'd ever use a vinyl top but that's just me.
