how can you determine the exact year on a 360 engine? the casting # 3418496 is for 71 thru 74 360. but each year is a different compression, hp etc. 71 is 8.7/1 72 is 8.8/1 73 and 74 are 8.4/1 is there any way to determine which year it is?

casted into the right side here is one 5-14-73 This would normally have been in a 74 car because most engines blocks were casted in the prior year of the car build. But not always.

Read this thread to find out how...

How to ID a Small Block Engine Block:

34xxxxx IS an early block and I prefer them.
That X block looks to be a nice piece.

I like the resto block and the R block due to the lifter bores beefier . But what was nice on the X block is they are casted as 318's You would never know they are 340's that some could be bored to 4.250. I had one 4.125 with a 4" stroke 421
