Hi, I've got a 1964 Dodge Dart GT (273ci) and the engine block is cracked. I've been told finding a 273 will be very hard, and that a 318LA will fit just fine, so I should buy a 318LA instead. What are some good companies/websites to purchase a rebuilt engine from? And do you agree that a 318LA is a viable option? Thanks in advance!

If you’re not a stickler for originality, a 318 will work just fine. 273s are tough to come by.. even LA 318s aren’t so easy to find in my neck of the woods at least. Once I get my 340 ready for my 68 Dart, I’ll be selling its original 318. Im sure I’ll have to sit on it a while since it’s its not a terribly desirable engine around here.

What about the ol 90s jeep grand cherokee engine swap? or is that Magnum?
Zoolander

O'Reilly Auto parts has rebuilt 318 long blocks for $2800 plus $400 for core. 4 year limited warranty

darn just junked one...would have cost more to ship it then it worth
just say NO to jasper ........
you could probably find a good running truck with a 318 then know its good for under 1k

as far as 318's note that anything you buy isn't going to have the same manifold bolt size and angle in the heads, so you'll need a manifold, or to re use your 273 heads. also, the crank pilot is larger so you'll need an adapter for your smaller hub torque converter (not a big deal).

i have a complete 273 that's a great runner-- pulled from my 68 dart that i'm doing a big block swap on.

shoot me a PM if interested.

Depending on which year 318 you get, Yes, it's a fairly easy swap. If you decide to keep it a 273 and want to buy a used block from that guy in Temecula, let me know. We can maybe ride together to save an extra trip and some gas. I could use a good standard 273 crank if he has one, or, if you decide to not use yours. PM me if interested.

I reached out to the Temecula guy and he's actually in Bakersfield area..

Thanks everyone for your valuable input. Would getting a 318 improve my chances of my next block lasting longer compared to a 273? Also, if I go with a 318, how difficult is it to find a manifold?

Also, I tried sending you a private message but it says your inbox is full. Wondering if you have any recommendations on who could do a good job on an engine swap at a reasonable price in San Diego.

Yeah, that makes it a whole day trip. I don't know anyone locally to do the swap these days. I've always done my own work. You might check with the local Mopar club. There may be a member that would be willing to do the job, or, know someone who would.

wish you were on my side of the states because I have everything you need and price would be right, Joe

If you missed post #11 up above, @junkyardhero might be a one stop shop that isn't too far away. Unless you're dead set on not getting another 273.
thanks for the props man. we a got a chance to speak on the phone and went over some options.

i've got the parts that'll make it happen like action jackson, but i'm booked up to my eyeballs for the next 6~8 weeks and can't squeeze another car in at the moment.

318 will bolt right in etc. 273 is ok too if you can find one that runs and is good to drop in and of course a 340 hey ya never know you may stumble upon one...
