Where to buy rebuilt engine?

-
Hi, I've got a 1964 Dodge Dart GT (273ci) and the engine block is cracked. I've been told finding a 273 will be very hard, and that a 318LA will fit just fine, so I should buy a 318LA instead. What are some good companies/websites to purchase a rebuilt engine from? And do you agree that a 318LA is a viable option? Thanks in advance!
we have several complete 273s but we're in pa near carlisle

Thanks everyone for your valuable input. Would getting a 318 improve my chances of my next block lasting longer compared to a 273? Also, if I go with a 318, how difficult is it to find a manifold?
Use a 318. 273 isn't worth it and the bore shrouding is terrible.
Where in san diego are you? I'm in oceanside and I build engines.

Aww man someone is going to come on here and fight the good fight for the 273 now...:poke::lol:
I remember being a teen maybe 14 or 15 the first time I ever say a 273 in a 66 Barracuda
the guy that owned it was maybe in his 30s 20 years older I'm like "273? what's that?" never heard of it till then.

I'd use the 318..
..but yeah there are the diehards.. similar to the Slant crowd, which are closely related to the...
"go 360 over a 318" bunch who live next to the "put a big block in it!" gang.

I have a friend and member here who had a 273 that was pretty stout. I did the heads and he installed a Schneider .solid .473 lift 224@.050 110 .
There's a cap to the power you can make though, and it starts with the tiny bore size.

I am working with Mark from wholesale machine and marine. They are based in Reno. Their builds look good. I have a 318 long block from them. I am months away from being ready to drop it in but it all looks top notch. It was $2260 delivered, no core and even painted any color you want with 5 yr warranty. You can find them on eBay.

Just remember if you go 318 you will need a 318 flywheel or flexplate and if it's automatic you will need the bushing for the back of the crank for the torque converter hub as all 273s used small hub cranks and all 318s use large hub cranks.

There's a shop in town that will build the early convertor with a late snout to fit the larger crank register

Using a 273 flex plate or flywheel on a 318 or forged crank 340 is not problem. They bolt right on. Not all 273's have the small converter register. The '68-9 models have the large one, just like a 318 or any other V8 crank.

Ha! you don't know how many times I've gotten into the "bore doesn't matter " discussion etc. when talking about 318/340 you can't tell some folks that a 4 inch bore is ideal so you can have large valves in the heads...add to that that every hot classic performance small block is at least a 4 inch bore...some people just want to argue I think...

Also don't forget about the exhaust manifolds! I can't seem to be able to find anything but the original exhaust manifolds from my 273 to fit on my 340! Still looking.

if it's an early A with a V8 nothing but the stock year correct stuff really fits. well, on the driver's side that is.

some people have had success with 340 manifolds, but if you have a manual and power steering things get a little tricky.
