Trying to figure out which engine this is without taking it apart. It came in a 1970 Dart that I recently bought

Well, by the length of the bypass hose, it's a tall deck, which means it's a 198 or a 225. There's a pad that stick out from under the head where it bolts to the block just behind and under the alternator. Probably be easier to see it if you remove the belt and pull the alternator all the way over to the passenger's side far as it will go. Then, just look right where the head meets the block just under where the alternator was. You'll probably have to scrape some grease and paint off. But it will be a series of letters and numbers with the engine size in it. Something like "RG225xxxxx" or some such.

It is a '67 or newer RG block. Depending which crankshaft and connecting rods are inside, it's either a 198 or a 225 (probably a 225; there were a lot more of those made).

On my list of projects I never got round to and probably won't: Argentinian '906 big-block Slant-6 at 3.625" bore, crank stroked to 4.41", producing a 273 Slant-6. Dress it up with "Commando 273" (or "Charger 273") air cleaner decal, black-crackle valve cover, and all the rest. Dual exhaust, etc. Anyone asks what's in my '62 Lancer or whatever, the answer is "Oh, it's got a 273 in it".
