My wife was just sold a length of rubber hose to repair an ATF leaking cooler line and it is covered in a cotton fabric. I would have used regular rubber fuel line hose. What purpose of the cotton cover, it seems it will just disintegrate as soon as it gets oil/grease on it?

Are you sure that it's cotton and not a heat resistant cover?

It looks like the imprint has "Gates GLOO Cotton 3/8 inch 300 psi WP LOOK". The words in capital letters (mine) might be misspelled.

Could the cotton prevent ballooning? I had 1 cloth covered line in my truck, a very thin bypass hose?

You may want to recheck the labeling. The outer fabric is a strength member and abrasion coating: I have used cotton covered, double reinfocred hi temp hose for racing oil cooler lines; you could tow a battleship with it.
