Ran the lines and checked for leaks. Let it get hot and checked the idle. A quarter turn and she ran top shelf.

Still plan on checking the timing and checking valve lash in the coming weeks but for now she is happy.
 
I think the idle "like a lump cam" was probably too lean. I went thru ~3 Holley 1920 carbs that idled like that before I got one that ran perfectly smooth. With the others it would stumble when you first press the throttle. This was over decades, several mechanics who said "bad valves" and did a valve job to no effect, and finally a whole new long block. Was the carb all along.
